Cotati, California Rejects Marijuana Dispensary

The Press Democrat has word that a Santa Rosa, California medical Marijuana dispensary owner was denied a move to Cotati, an adjacent town in Sonoma County, California. Here's a snip from the article:

The City Council unanimously rejected the Santa Rosa pot purveyor's bid for a license to operate on East Cotati Avenue, saying the building she had chosen did not meet parking requirements.

Now, Frank, the owner of the three-year-old Organicann dispensary on Santa Rosa Avenue, is looking at another location because the lease is set to expire.

Frank has applied for permits to set up shop in the unincorporated county on East Todd Road, about a mile from her current location, a Sonoma County planning official said.

I know Dona, she's a really nice lady and is out there to help everyone who needs it. I'm sad to see her leave that location, but I know she will thrive wherever she goes. Look for me at the Organicann booth at the Harmony Festival 2008 in Santa Rosa!

House Judiciary Leader Criticizes DEA’s Attacks On Medi-Pot Dispensaries

The US Drug Enforcement Agency has been pressuring landlords in California to evict tenants who operate legitimate Medical Marijuana dispensaries and it has caught the attention of US Congressman John Conyers (D-MI), Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. You can read the whole story on NORML.org, but here's a snippet:
In July, DEA administrators mailed letters to dozens of landlords in Los Angeles warning owners that they risk arrest, up to 20 years in prison, and the loss of their property if they continue renting to cannabis dispensaries. Since that time, similar letters have been sent to the landlords of other medicinal cannabis providers throughout the state, including several in San Francisco, leading to the closure of various high-profile dispensaries.

Last week the Arts District Healing Center, a Los Angeles-based medical cannabis provider, filed a federal lawsuit in US District Court claiming that the DEA extorted its landlord by sending a letter threatening imprisonment and property seizure.
I'm glad someone in our Government is standing up to these bullies.

Huntington Beach Takes Up Medi-MJ Ban Tonight

The OC Register posted news of talks to place a ban on medical Marijuana dispensaries in Huntington Beach, CA. It seems the city council is worried that a pot club would bring violence and other ills to their city, here's a snip from the article:
The council will vote tonight on an ordinance that bans the dispensaries from opening in the city. Huntington Beach is one of several cities that in the last several years has shied away from an 11-year-old law enacted by voters that allows medical marijuana dispensaries to open and operate in the state.

Huntington has no medical marijuana dispensaries. The closest legal medical marijuana dispensaries are located in Los Angeles.

Mayor Gil Coerper said he believes there are better alternatives than medical marijuana to ease the pain of illnesses. He said medical marijuana dispensaries can promote violence.
Violence? I doubt it.
