US Drug War A Failure

The L.A. Times reports that the US's War On Drugs is a failure.

Former Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo, who helped supervise the Brookings Institution study, says Washington needs to focus on consumption in addition to targeting traffickers.

Reporting from Mexico City -- The United States' war on drugs has failed and will continue to do so as long as it emphasizes law enforcement and neglects the problem of consumption, a Washington think tank says in a report co-chaired by a former president of Mexico.

It's certainly not news that the war on drugs has been less than successful over the years, but it's time we think and talk about it again. With any luck, as the article mentions, we'll get some sane administration in the USA to get things on the right track again.

George Bush says we are losing the war on drugs. You know what that implies? There's a war being fought, and people on drugs are winning it! Hahahah! What does THAT tell you about drugs? some smart, creative people on that side. They're winning a war, and they're fucked up! Hahahah! Are we winning? It's like, they fight the war on drugs like the colonials fought the Indians, right? They're walking in a straight line in red coats; drug users are like Indians. They're up in the trees, going *puff puff puff* "Are they fighting us? *exhale* I guess we're winning by default! Hah hahah! No combat, we're ahead!

Bill To Protect California Employees Headed To Assembly Floor

Here is a following to our previous post about recent court ruling that found employers had the right to fire an employee for using medical marijuana during non-work hours. In an effort to protect medical marijuana patients rights, Assembly Bill 2279 is headed to the Assembly floor for a vote in the near future.

"The California Supreme Court decision said that an employer may fire someone solely because they use medical marijuana outside the workplace," said Leno in a previous statement. "Long ago, the legislature prohibited patient use of medical cannabis in the workplace or during working hours. AB 2279 is merely an affirmation of the intent of the voters and the legislature that medical marijuana patents need not be unemployed to benefit from their medicine."

Would your employer fire you for taking the Valium that your doctor prescribed you? I didn't think so. Why should they be able to fire you for utilizing any medicine that your doctor has given you a prescription for?

Debunking The Hemp Conspiracy Theory

AlterNET posted a good article on "The Hemp Conspiracy Theory", which many of you have heard. The Government is keeping pot down, maaaan. Well, here's the facts:
California's 1913 narcotics law banned possession of cannabis preparations -- which California NORML head Dale Gieringer believes was a legal error, that the provision was intended to parallel those affecting opium, morphine and cocaine. The law was amended in 1915 to ban the sale of cannabis without a prescription. "Thus hemp pharmaceuticals remained technically legal to sell, but not possess, on prescription!" Gieringer wrote in The Origins of Cannabis Prohibition in California. "There are no grounds to believe that this prohibition was ever enforced, as hemp drugs continued to be prescribed in California for years to come." In 1928, the state began requiring hemp farmers to notify law enforcement about their crops.
That's just a snip, make sure to read the whole article at the link above.

British citizen jailed 4 years for microscopic amount of cannabis

For an amount of cannabis weight less than a grain of sugar (0.003g), Keith Brown was arrested at the Dubai airport! This article includes some other notable arrests of foreigners for similarily asinine reasons. While the indoor ski resort and the "World" land development in the Arabian sea sure hold some appeal, I'm afraid this is one country I will never visit.

Admit War On Drugs Has Been A Failure

There's an article on the failure of the drug war on HaroldNET, an online publication in Washington.
And so Barack Obama tells high school kids in New Hampshire that he "made some bad decisions" at their age. He "experimented" with pot and cocaine. This is old news -- but even if it were new news, it would be ho-hum in today's politics.

After all, drug use has proven no bar to high office -- at least for those who evaded arrest. Vice President Al Gore, ex-House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas have all admitted to smoking pot. President Bush refuses to deny that he snorted cocaine. And no one believes that Bill Clinton "didn't inhale" on that joint.

I would second the ho-hum, except for this: More than half a million Americans now rot in jail for nonviolent drug offenses, some not as bad as Obama's.
As stated in the article, there have been over 38 million arrests for nonviolent drug charges since 1970, nearly 2 million just last year. From a logical perspective, is the drug war working? Or from President Bush's perspective, is our children learning?

"George Bush says ‘we are losing the war on drugs.’ Well, you know what that implies? There's a war going on…and people on drugs are winning it!"-- Bill Hicks

Florida Cops Lose 45 Pounds of Pot

Florida's WFTV is reporting that after a drug dog sniffed out 100 pounds of Marijuana, that was shipped through Orlando-Sanford International airport, the local sheriff decided to let the two separate shipments make it to their intended destinations to bust the recipients. Apparently those involved with the second delivery were warned about the first bust and took action to confuse the officers, and got away with 45 pounds of Marijuana.

"A short while after the delivery of the package, there was a flurry of activity. A couple of vehicles came into the area and left shortly after. One vehicle took off through an orange grove and apparently that's the vehicle that had the second package containing the marijuana," explained Sgt. John Herrell, Lake County Sheriff's Office."

You can catch some video of the ordeal here.

SF Mayor sez: The War On Drugs Is A Failure

According to CBS, San Francisco's mayor; Gavin Newsom has declared the war on drugs a failure.
"If you want to get serious, if you want to reduce crime by 70% in this country overnight, end this war on drugs," he told reporters at City Hall on Thursday. "You want to get serious, seriously serious about crime and violence end this war on drugs."
I would have to agree, it's like Bill Hicks said;
"George Bush says ‘we are losing the war on drugs.’ Well, you know what that implies? There's a war going on…and people on drugs are winning it! Well, what does that tell you about drugs? Some smart, creative motherfuckers on that side. You see, I think drugs have done some good things for us. I really do. And if you don't believe drugs have done good things for us, do me a favor. Go home tonight. Take all your albums, all your tapes and all your CDs and burn them. 'Cause you know what, the musicians that made all that great music that's enhanced your lives throughout the years ... rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreal fucking high on drugs.
.... but I digress....

Suspect Shot During Humboldt Pot Probe

Two Humboldt County sheriff's deputies were involved in the fatal shooting of a suspect in a marijuana grow-op search on Wednesday. The officers were put on "administrative leave" as punishment, here's a snip:

The sheriff's department says the person who was killed confronted the deputies with a shotgun on land owned by the Pacific Lumber Company near Larabee Valley, about 30 miles east of Fortuna. One of the deputies fired his service weapon, striking the suspect.
This kind of thing happens a lot more than you'd think, we had police shoot and kill a teenager in my town this summer. The details on this story are not very clear, he did have a shotgun to protect his crop, but was he threatening the officers in any way?
